UCR Doctoral Student Receives Best Poster Award at Tahoe Symposium

Daniela Oltean

Daniela Oltean explains her project to UC San Diego researcher Michael Latz at the TSR&TP Symposium in Lake Tahoe.

Daniela Oltean, a doctoral student at UC Riverside, was presented the Best Poster Award at the TSR&TP Symposium in Lake Tahoe April 20-21, 2001. Oltean's poster, titled Bacillus thuringiensis Cry1A Toxin-interacting Proteins in Heliothis virescens and Manduca sexta, focused on the mechanism of toxicity of bacterial crystal proteins against insect pests. Bacillus thuringiensis is used in agriculture as a biological insecticide because it naturally produces crystal proteins that damage an insect's guts. Understanding the mechanisms of how the toxin works is important for engineering B. thuringiensis toxins that are more pest specific, which will decrease human exposure to synthetic chemical pesticides.

In addition to the Best Poster Award, two honorable mention awards were given to Dimitri Deheyn of UC San Diego and Jessica Hittle of UC Berkeley.

Posters were evaluated for scientific content, creativity, and their ability to communicate science to a broad audience. Oltean was given a $500 travel award to be used for collaborations at another UC campus or National Lab, or for presenting her research at a scientific meeting.

UC Davis Awarded $2.6 Million Grant to Build Research and Education Center at Lake Tahoe

The Tahoe Research Group, headed by Dr. Charles Goldman (keynote speaker at the 2001 TSR&TP Symposium) of UC Davis has received a $2.6 million grant from the Packard Foundation to build a new research and education center at Lake Tahoe. Biorestoration Workshop at UC Los Angeles June 20, 2001

University of California researchers are invited to attend a workshop on Biorestoration (broadly defined) to be held at UCLA on June 20, 2001. The primary purpose of the workshop is to formulate a plan for developing a UC-based biorestoration research effort in the near future.

Preliminary Goals Are:
  • Convene UC researchers/teachers with interests in bioremediation, phytoremediation, ecosystem restoration, and related areas.
  • Refine an integrated research mission starting with the idea of providing California with scientifically sound and economical biorestoration strategies. These strategies will involve the use of micro/macro flora/fauna, and aim to (A) Mitigate toxic chemical problems in coastal, rural and urban California and (B) Restore environmental quality to a high level.
  • Determine the appropriate level of effort and commensurate level of funding. For example, demonstration projects in the field would require either a larger level of funding, or carefully orchestrated funding such that clusters of two or three projects are used to attack a problem.
  • How do we make this happen? What groundwork needs to be done to identify realistic funding avenues? Who will spearhead this effort?
This one-day workshop will be sponsored by UC TSR&TP's Associate Director for Southern UC Campuses (Arthur Winer). Travel expenses will be reimbursed. If you are interested in attending the workshop, please contact Tom Harmon at UCLA (tharmon@ucla.edu, 310-206-3735).

Conference on Health Impacts of Gasoline Emissions, June 12-13, 2001

The Office of Environmental Health Hazard Assessment (OEHHA) of the California Environmental Protection Agency (Cal/EPA) and the Southern California Particle Center and Supersite (SCPCS) at UCLA are pleased to announce a meeting on Issues in the Assessment of Health Impacts of Gasoline Emissions in California. The meeting will be held at the UCLA Faculty Center on June 12-13, 2001. This meeting is a follow up to a similar meeting held at OEHHA in Oakland in June 2000.

For more information, see the full text of the conference announcement.

New Communication Venue for UC Multicampus Research Units (MRUs)

UC Office of the President is now publishing an electronic newsletter for Multicampus Research Units (MRUs) like the TSR&TP. The newsletter, MRU eNews is published semi-annually and distributed to MRUs via email. MRU eNews is also available on UCOP's web site.
